Man wearing a suistruggling to push rock up a hill metaphor for mental health

Are you feeling like this?

In the UK, 1 in 4 people per year, experience a mental health issue (McManus., et al, 2009).

  • Thinking you have to put on a mask or a show for everyone, when in fact you feel empty inside
  • Feeling low in mood or really sad
  • Feeling empty, hopeless
  • Thoughts of 'not being here anymore' or wanting to 'escape'
  • Feeling irritable (snapping at people you care about)
  • Feeling angry
  • Being aggressive, breaking things, hurting others
  • Feeling scared
  • Crying
  • Thinking like no one cares about you
  • Worrying at night
  • Not being able to sleep
  • Feeling numb and not caring about things/people
  • Feeling lost, not knowing where to turn
  • Being aware of how fast your heart beats
  • Worrying about your health/or other people's health
  • Thinking no one listens to you
  • Thinking there is no where to turn
  • Not being able to sleep a night
  • Feeling tired
  • Feeling disconnected
  • Encountering a loss or breakdown in a relationship
  • Nightmares or flashbacks following an accident...

These are just some of the things you could be experiencing, of course there are many others that have not been included.

If any of these issues are affecting you, please understand there are professionals willing to hear you and support you.

How do I know I am stressed?

Life is tough.

We are told, we need to work hard at school. We are told we need to get a degree or qualification. We are told that we need to be successful in the career we choose. We also need to be in a relationship, have kids, earn lots of money, be fit, look good...

So much we need to do.

Being told we need to DO IT ALL, is not great for us. And sometimes we cannot do it all. Sometimes, stuff happens that makes it feel impossible to do it all and have it all.

Deaths, relationship breakdowns, extra pressure at work, deadlines, job cuts, that colleague making life hard, kids having issues at school, loved ones falling ill, you experiencing an illness, your partner feeling disconnected from you... the list goes on.

Life events can suddenly take its toll on how you have been managing. Suddenly you wake up and realise,

 "I can't do this anymore".

If it is not your mind that is telling you this, your body may also be giving you a clue that you are stressed.

  • Not feeling hungry or wanting to eat  foods that are high in sugar
  • Wanting that extra beer or glass of wine, which may turn into a bottle.
  • Hair loss
  • Poor sleep - waking in the night
  • Feeling tired in the day
  • Not wanting to socialise
  • Lack of motivation to exercise
  • Feeling irritated and being 'short' with people
  • Feeling tearful

There are so many ways that people experience the signs of stress.

Your way is unique to you.
